Welcome to Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design.

Whitecliffe is nestled into the fringe of Auckland’s Central Business District and waterfront. Auckland, a cosmopolitan city of 1.5 million people provides a colourful multicultural environment and offers all the attractions and amenities of a world class city.

Overlooking Auckland’s beautiful harbour, Whitecliffe students enjoy easy access to cafes, shops and pubs all within a two minute walk of our campus that includes studios and Gallery at St Georges Bay Road and our main building on Balfour Road.

Whitecliffe has steadily grown in both student numbers and reputation over the 29 years since it was established. Very high completion and retention rates (see TEC report) combined with excellent assessments of quality (see NZQA report), Whitecliffe is recognised as a leading edge private arts and design tertiary institution

Our faculty are practising artists and designers, art educators arts managers and arts therapists – many of them leaders in their field and engaged in significant research in their discipline. They bring with them a wealth of experience which meets the needs of the students in our interdisciplinary approach to education. Teaching and learning is enriched by Auckland’s creative sector that support Whitecliffe with scholarships, prizes of excellence, with offers of student internships around Auckland.

Whitecliffe partnerships with organisations in New Zealand and overseas provide opportunities to students to expand their horizons by offering pathways to further their experiences. Our graduates are recognised as creative thinkers and innovative problem solvers who can adapt to any number of industries and positions. Our philosophy that Art is Life is very much part of a student’s experience at Whitecliffe. I encourage you to come and visit us and see for yourself the creative experiences that Whitecliffe has to offer.

Balfour Road Campus

Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design is located in a modern facility on Balfour Road, Parnell, that includes studios, library, darkrooms, lighting studio, seminar rooms, student common room, lecture hall and our administration offices.

High ceilings mean each first year studio has a high amount of natural sunlight, making them ideal not just for daily classes but also for exhibitions of work.

Students have just a five minute walk to the Parnell Rose Gardens and ten to the The Strand. Whitecliffe operates on three floors of the Balfour Road building, currently shared with Industrial Research.

St George’s Bay Road Studios & Pearce Gallery

Our St Georges Bay Road Studios & Pearce Gallery are just 3 minutes walk from the Balfour Road building. This spacious building houses studio spaces for students in the Fine Arts major, as well as a dedicated computer lab for Year 4 Graphic Design students.

The Pearce Gallery, located at the front of the Studios, is available for internal and external exhibitions. Contact Jill Sorensen, Gallery Co-ordinator, at jills@whitecliffe.ac.nz to enquire about booking the Pearce Gallery.
