Australian Maritime College

Australian Maritime College, Tasmania

Welcome to the Australian Maritime College (AMC) at the University of Tasmania – Australia’s national institute for maritime and maritime-related education, training and research. AMC is one of the seven founding members of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), which represents five continents.

AMC is globally recognized as being a centre for excellence. Our multi-million dollar suite of specialist teaching, learning and research facilities are internationally acclaimed and are utilized by government bodies and maritime related businesses world-wide. In addition, our professionally experienced, teaching and research staff have extremely strong industry links.

Located on the banks of the beautiful Tamar River in Australia’s picturesque island state of Tasmania, AMC has two main campuses. The Newnham site is in Launceston: a vibrant regional city known for its stunning architecture, beautiful natural setting and Mediterranean climate, along with many cultural activities and sporting events. The beach, snowfields, wilderness (and the mainland) are less than an hour away. Our second campus, home to our coastal seafaring students and AMC’s impressive fleet of training, is located atBeauty Point.

Students are provided with flexible course options, with opportunities for full-time, part-time and online distance study. Whether it’s captaining a vessel, safeguarding marine environments, designing advanced ocean engineering structures, farming seafood or keeping the world’s goods moving; AMC offers a wide range of courses, including vocational certificates at many levels, bachelor degrees and diplomas; as well as postgraduate certificates and degrees, including doctorates.

Our class sizes are small, meaning students and teaching staff work closely together (often knowing each other by first names) and our campuses offer a range of student accommodation options. There are also many generous scholarships on offer.

With a high employment rate, our highly skilled graduates are in demand world-wide, with our alumni spread across 56 countries: indicating that AMC really can be ‘Your Ticket to the World’.

Utilizing our impressivere search facilities and cross-campus know-how, we work closely with industry and government on leading edge research questions which have recently included improving the propulsive efficiency of high speed catamarans, treatment of diseases affecting fish farmed salmon, ocean wave and tidal energy technologies and the environmental challenges facing the world’s oceans.

The growing maritime, marine and offshore sectors are an exciting and strategic area of growth for AMC at the University of Tasmania. I look forward to welcoming students who are looking for rewarding careers and real-world research opportunities.
