Swinburne is a progressive university that aims to increase Australia’s capacity in science, technology and innovation as the drivers of modern, internationalised economies and workplaces.
Our university is focused on high-impact global research, high-quality teaching and active engagement with both industry and the community.
Student outcomes
We provide a more personal experience for students, and are recognised for quality teaching, relevant courses and excellent facilities.
We have a flexible undergraduate degree structure, so that students can build a program with the breadth and depth of study that suits their individual study interests and career needs. We can also provide opportunities to engage with education from vocational learning through to postdoctoral studies.
We are consistently among the highest ranked universities in Melbourne for education experience by theGood Universities Guide, including for teaching quality, graduate satisfaction … and getting a job.
High-impact research
Swinburne has earned a reputation for high-impact research. We have leading-edge research centres that respond to industry and government priorities, and the needs of society.
Our research focuses on niche and emerging areas, and we’re driven to find innovative research solutions to real world problems that can also create jobs and wealth.
Our research strengths are in the areas of advanced manufacturing technologies, astrophysics, biotechnology, cognitive sciences, computing, design, micro and nano-engineering, optics and applied laser technology, and social sustainability and wellbeing.
Delivering industry outcomes
Our close ties with industry provide our students with invaluable business and workplace experiences during their studies.
Industry representatives inform, shape and challenge our curriculum, while more obvious impact might be guest lecturers from industry, a final-year cross-discipline team project matched to a real business need, or a paid work placement for participants in our long-running and successful Industry-based Learning program.
Our industry connections extend beyond the classroom. We collaborate with industry in the commercialisation of major research projects. We also deliver customised training to businesses and organisations.
Facilitating a global perspective
The internationalisation of the curriculum at Swinburne helps prepare graduates for an increasingly globalised and mobile workforce.
In partnership with more than 90 educational institutions around the world, Swinburne also offers assistance and opportunity to study internationally on exchange, study tours or study abroad. The university’s Sarawak campus in Malaysia even provides the benefits of cross-cultural learning without leaving Swinburne.
Swinburne is a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities and the Community Colleges for International Development.
Embracing sustainability
At Swinburne we’re committed to genuine sustainability. Our social and built environments are designed with the most up-to-date sustainability principles. The Advanced Technologies Centre, opened at the Hawthorn campus in 2011, was the first education building in Australia to be awarded a five-star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
We’re home to the National Centre for Sustainability and we were the first Australian university to sign a sustainability covenant with the Environment Protection Authority.
Sustainability is embedded in our teaching, learning and research, so that we are working on practical solutions for the 21st Century. We know our future depends on it.
